Hello!!

We are reaching the end of our scholar year and also of our blogs. This way, it’s with sadness that I tell you that this will be (probably) my last post here and it’ll be about a TV miniseries called “Angels in America”: why this title?

To be brief, I wouldn’t explain the plot itself (you can see it here if you want: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angels_in_America:_A_Gay_Fantasia_on_National_Themes#Plot ), I’ll just tell you the main theme and also the last scene in order to make a link with the main question (why this title?).

“Angels in America” explores “the state of the nation” in the 80s: the sexual, racial, religious, political and social issues confronting the country during the Reagan years, as the AIDS epidemic spreads, also portraying a wide range of reactions to illness, both by the patients and by those around them.

At the end of the play, we see Prior (a gay man with AIDS), Louis (Prior’s boyfriend at the beginning, but then he abandons him because he was unable to deal with his boyfriend’s disease; later he begins a relationship with Joe), Belize (a former drag queen, he is Prior’s best friend) and Hannah (Joe’s mother; she moved to New York in order to help her son; she finds that Joe has abandoned his wife) sitting on the rim of the fountain in Central Park with the statue of the Bethesda angel*.

They say that when the Millennium came, everyone who was “suffering, in the body or the spirit, [and] walked through the waters of the fountain of Bethesda, would be healed, washed clean of pain.”

*Bethesda angel:

“(Christian Religious Writings / Bible) New Testament a pool in Jerusalem reputed to have healing powers, where a paralytic was healed by Jesus (John 5:2)”

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Bethesda

The four characters mentioned above represent Jews and Christians and agnostics; homosexuals and heterosexuals; blacks and whites; men and women; caregivers and patients; two generations > the American mix! Different people, opposites whose destinies collapsed into the fountain with the Bethesda angel statue. When there, we can see that, no matter who they are, they seem competent contributors to the future of the World.

I agree with my colleague Jorge:

“…that allows us to think that, although the 80s were a big era regarding new concepts of life and breaking free of the old mainstream canons along with all of those deadly diseases, there was a sense of hope hovering over the American society – “in America”.”

http://perspectives19.blogspot.pt/

So the angels represent hope and cure, the cleaning of the soul and body from the pain and they’re in America because of 2 things (in my opinion): all those problems which America was facing in the 80s and the “American dream”, because it’s considered the land where your dreams come true.

Poor deluded people…

Dear colleagues, I don’t know what you took before writing the posts but don’t worry, I’m here to open your eyes and tell you why your choices were so wrong!!…

1. Cristiana and Margarida – Scientific progress

http://travelthroughtheworldofenglish.blogspot.com/

Excessively vague! At the beginning I was guessing if the icon was the three men or what they have done… But analyzing the title (“Scientific progress”) please, girls, can’t you see that science is ALWAYS in progress? There isn’t a right decade where science will be highlighted!

-=-=-=-

2. Yuan – Kpop

http://mindspringroll.blogspot.com/

Dear Yuan, faster I’ll go to Saturn in vacations than Kpop turns into something global! I mean it will not happen (at least in this decade… maybe in the future…robots will adopt the kpop… who knows!?)

-=-=-=-

3. Rodrigo – Facebook

http://rodrigo_posts.blogs.sapo.pt/

Had it its spread time? Yes. Had it its fame time? Of course. Will it always be spreading? In no kind of way!

Honey, Facebook will be just like our old “grandfather” Hi5! (Do you still remember what hi5 was?…)

-=-=-=-

4. Nat and Lu – Twitter

http://natandluteachyou.tumblr.com/

Hm… My critic is based in one question: has the “twitter bird” flew away from your blog? (Maybe it knows that it’s obvious that Twitter will never be a global icon…)

My critic to Facebook can also be applied to twitter.

-=-=-=-

5. Frederico – Apple

http://englishessaysfred.wordpress.com/

Fashionable design, good system and it will really be the next icon because everyone will have one of tho…ups, wait a moment, I think neither a third of world population will be able to buy such an expensive thing, moreover in times of crisis. Fred, what were you thinking about?

(Uh ok, it might be an icon, of cooourse…in people’s dreams!)

-=-=-=-

6. Hugo Cardoso, Hugo Santos, Nuno and João – China

http://moreblogmoreinf.wordpress.com/

“中國製造”…我聯想到假貨。當然,中國有很好的產業,但也有假貨,低質量的產品(例如一些可以危害健康的化學品和材料)。中國,任何其他國家一樣,是不完美的!

和語言?哇,我認為這將是容易學習世界各地的中國在這十年…沒有,有沒有什麼是不可能的,因為我敢打賭,你或多或少能看到這段文字的主題,或理解至少有一個字,沒有?:)

(For a better info, please visit: http://translate.google.com/?hl=pt-PT&tab=wT )

7. Maria – Alexander McQueen

http://mariasperpective.blogspot.com/

I really love him! A great designer!

His clothes are so wonderful, so magnificent, so unique, so…expensive! Dear Maria, let’s be realistic: it isn’t everyone that will be able to adhere to his style. In addiction, an already dead person can’t cause so much influence on global level.

During this decade will appear lots of new designers…

His fashion still exists because global icons such as Lady Gaga are spreading his style through the world.

-=-=-=-

8. Tiago and Ricardo – Tom “durrrr” Dwan

http://rthistonomics.blogspot.com/

Well… I, a very informed person, haven’t never ever heard about some “durrrr”… Besides, do you know how much you need to pay to simply enter in a casino?! Do you think that in times of world crisis people would be interested in poker? Oh please, people will envy him and his money!

-=-=-=-

9. José – Solar Power

http://blankepage.blogspot.com/

Hm… Something really new and original… Well, ok, let’s imagine that everyone adheres to that system… Will it really work?

I never thought that you could be so selfish!! Have you thought about the northern countries and the tropic regions (where at least 2 in each 3 days are clouded)?

-=-=-=-

10. Bruno and Raúl – Samsung

http://theenglishtunes.blogspot.com/

How will it contribute to people’s happiness?! Taking money from our pockets and making us addicted to technology? I can see fat people, children in front of their computers, tablets, with their glasses, looking at the screens, were they’ll have everything… Hm this reminds me something…..

-=-=-=-

11. Ana Cesário, Ana Batalha and Beatriz – Angela Merkel

http://economicssphere.blogspot.com/

A good choice for an icon…but just for the next 2 years (at most)!
chosing a person related with politics is tricky because they have their “popularity” for a short period of time.

-=-=-=-

12. Alexandra – Anonymous

http://benglishthroughmusic.blogspot.com/

Anonymous was a good idea for an icon…NOWADAYS! They’re Internet as you said but Internet is always changing, at each second so I do not think they will last five years how much a decade…

-=-=-=-

13. Jorge – Ray Gun and WiTricity

http://perspectives19.blogspot.com/

Ray Gun? GUN??? We want war or peace? Tsc tsc, encouraging violence is so bad Jorge… What could happen if this gun fell into wrong hands? I’ll give you a hint: Worldwide Torture!!! Uh yeah, that’s really what we want the most!

WiTricity!? Good idea!! I like it, but I think it will be a little bit expensive to put it through all the world… Besides it, I can’t see WiTricity as some kind of an icon.

-=-=-=-

So, don’t be so deluded, let’s leave all your choices and vote for Lady Gaga to be the fashion icon in this decade! Available to everyone, unique and fantastic, Gagashion is definitely what you need!

Hi!!

This week we presented in classroom many works which consisted in showing a planning of how would be our final work in the 3rd period. Regarding the themes, we had to pick a decade: 60s, 70s, 80s or 90s and work something inside it, like for example the music, a tv series, culture, fashion… After watching all the presentations we had the task of choosing one that from our point of view was the best and write about it in our blogs, bearing in mind the various criteria to evaluate:

  • Planning
  • Structure
  • Creativity
  • Goals and how to clarify them

So, analyzing the overall, I choose two presentations: the one from João and Ricardo (about the 70s) and the other one from the group of the Hugos and Nuno (about the 80s).

João and Ricardo – For me their work was very close for what a planning should be, very organized, with deep analysis and a good structure. Even the verbs were well put there. They thought of everything and we could notice the hard work and deep searching and they are obviously one of the best groups in my opinion.

Hugo Santos, Hugo Cardoso and Nuno Simões – nothing better to explain the patterns of life in the 80s than the TV series: “The Jeffersons”. They presented a simple powerpoint, but it was so well structured and explained and the idea of doing some kind of  theater was very imaginative (“out of the box”). Even the  sources were well presented. We could see that they have chosen a theme that they will really enjoy to work and they managed to pass to the public (us) the interest in wanting to know more and therefore see the project itself completed and presented at the 3rd period.

To finish I want to highlight some people. The pretty good fluency and facility in speaking English of Jorge (that everybody already knows). The same to Frederico, who even with that little problem with the command haven’t choked. And honestly I was also surprised with the presentation of Rodrigo. However, he should have been more “linked” to the theme he had chosen. I also wanted to say to bet on a little bit more different ideas about making a project work (such as games, exercises or theaters), because this way it’s easier to  captivate the audience, bringing it closer with the theme and the presentation becomes more interactive and easy to remember.

Only remains wishing good luck to everyone in making the final project and I hope it’ll be “bombastic” and that it will enrich our knowledge.

Hello Christmas!…

Hello everybody! The 1st period is ending and with that, we find ourselves in the last week of classes, filled with activities, parties, school trips…

Today I’ll focus my post on the awards party of the short movies of College of St Andre and the Christmas party

The first was held on monday (December 12th, 2011) on a calm and quiet night at the beginning but soon it was overrun by ghosts (Gothic scenery and also based on Phantom of the Opera).

The beginning was marked by three funny shorts and was followed by the revelation of the winners in each category, which were announced between various songs and small theatrical performances performed by students. Throughout the show appeared several presenters, all beautifully dressed. The night went well and I can say that, for first event, it went very well.

I really enjoyed it, too bad we did not have that in our time…” -by a 12th grade student

But despite this, we wanted to thank the two students of the 11th A who had the “Oscars night” idea and also to thank the Hélder Gomes, Helena and Rita, teachers without whom the party would not have been the same.

It was a really great night, I hope we’ll have it again!” -by one of the spectators

_____________

The Christmas party was held on this friday and the theme was Christmas in the World. All classes from 5th to 12th grade prepared their Christmas tables, focusing on one or several countries, among which were represented countries such as Australia, Hawaii, Italy, Mexico, Finland and many more. It is also a contest in which the best tables win.

The tables were decorated mainly with food and symbols that identify the country or countries selected. The table which will be evaluated was outside and then, inside the classroom, we had several tables with food and decorations.

At the end they announced the winning tables. It is with pride that, after so much work and dedication, I announce that our table (12th A + 12th B) was one of the winners! 😀

(soon I’ll post some photos…)

And thus ends another academic period.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Continuing the theme of the previous post: today we need to choose one presentation of the five that we had seen. The themes were: the Varieties of English – Social Status, the Varieties of English – British Dialects, AAVE English (African American Vernacular English) and the Indian English.

Despite the balanced presentations, I will choose the Varieties of English – British Dialects presentation.

From my point of view the group did a very nice job. They presented a clear and easily understanding speech, the powerpoint was very well done: organised with the main information. They made a great interaction with the auditorium and it also catched our attention and turned the work more interactive.

In sum this work increased our knowledge about the many and such different British dialects and I’d like to congratulate those two girls with the great job they did. Keep up good quality works!

The other groups were also terrific, with some positive and negative points, but in the overall we saw a hard work and a good effort from everyone. Once more keep going the nice job!
